Project overview

Leeward Renewable Energy’s (LRE) Caprock Wind project is an 80MW facility located in Quay County near San Jon, New Mexico. Energy from Caprock Wind is purchased by Xcel Energy’s Southwestern Public Service Company under a long-term power purchase agreement. Caprock Wind reached initial commercial operation in 2004 and was comprised of 80 1.0 MW wind turbine generators. In 2024 LRE began a repowering effort to replace the former turbines with 4.0MW turbines, reducing the number of turbines to 20 while maintaining the nameplate capacity of 80MW. The Caprock Wind repowering is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.
