Project overview

Leeward Renewable Energy’s (LRE) Kumeyaay Wind project is situated on 1,460 acres near Boulevard, California, and reached commercial operation in 2005. With a nameplate capacity of 50 MW, the project is comprised of 25 Gamesa G87 2.0 MW wind turbine generators, and interconnects to the San Diego Gas & Electric Company transmission system in CAISO. The output from the Kumeyaay Wind project is sold to SDG&E under a long-term power purchase agreement.

An old oak tree with a hollowed-out trunk, known as the Hanging Tree, sits at the entrance of the site. Local folklore says that an inmate escaped from the old Yuma prison many years ago and made his way up to where the project now sits before being caught and meeting his demise. Some technicians still report hearing strange noises in the O&M building at nights.
