Project overview

Leeward Renewable Energy’s (LRE) Sweetwater 1 project was the first phase in our Sweetwater Windpower complex. The project is on 4,500 acres in Nolan County just south of Sweetwater, Texas, and initially reached commercial operation in 2003. Originally 37.5 MW comprised of 25 GE 1.5 MW wind turbine generators, we repowered the facility in 2017 together with our Sweetwater 2 project. In the repowering, we left the existing towers in place, replaced the entire nacelles, and installed longer blades to enhance the turbines’ efficiency and energy production. LRE increased the capacity of each wind turbine generator to 1.62 MW and the nameplate capacity of the facility to 40 MW. The output from the Sweetwater 1 project is sold into the ERCOT market.
